Gearboxes serve the following functions:
1. Speed adjustment (acceleration and deceleration): This is what is commonly referred to as a variable-speed gearbox.
2. Changing the direction of transmission: For example, using two sector gears allows force to be transmitted perpendicularly to another rotating shaft.
3. Altering rotational torque: At a constant power level, the faster a gear rotates, the lower the torque exerted on the shaft; conversely, slower rotation results in higher torque.
4. Clutch function: By disengaging two previously meshed gears, the engine can be disconnected from the load (e.g., in braking or clutch systems).
5. Power distribution: For instance, a single engine can drive multiple output shafts via the gearbox's main shaft, thereby enabling one engine to power multiple loads.
